As well as continuing to work on getting the robotics class ready, recently I started
helping my younger boys make a mini Danjiri. Colin created a 3D model of the design
using the software I'm planning to use in the robotics class.
Hopefully we can add wheels to it soon!

I'm still spending as much time on the robotics class as my family and the
English school allows. The new motors are great, fast and powerful, too powerful
in fact, resulting in me making a lot of changes to the design to strengthen
it. This I've done, and you can see the tank driving around in the video below.
One other consequence of the powerful motors was that they were starving the
other electronics of power, resulting in the controlling computer (raspberry pi zero)
powering off! The latest design now has separate power supplies for the motors
and the computer.
依然として家族と英会話教室の仕事が許す限りの時間をロボティクス教室の準備に費やしています。
新しいモーターは素晴らしく、速くてパワーがあるのですが、実はパワフルすぎて、
それに合わせてデザインを強化するために大幅に変更しなくてはいけませんでした。これは完了したので、
戦車が走り回る様子を下の動画で観られます。モーターがパワフルになったことによるもう一つの影響は、
他の電子機器の電力が足りなくなってしまい、制御コンピュータ（Raspberry Pi Zero）の電源が切れてしまうことでした。
最新のデザインでは、モーターとコンピュータの電源供給を別にしました。
I'm now at a point where I'm confident in the speed, strength and control of the tank.
However, before I can let students and my kids start to build and play with it,
I need to make the batteries safe. They are very powerful, and need to be kept
away from inquisitive fingers ;) This is also true for the raspberry pi laptop I'm
designing. Before the students make the tank, they need to put the laptop together,
write some programs to control LEDs, and do some 3D modelling. I've completed my
first design, which I'm now printing and assembling!
戦車のスピード、強度と制御には自信がもてるところまできました。でも生徒さんや自分の子供達が組み立てて遊び始める前に電池を安全にする必要があります。
電池はパワフルすぎて、好奇心旺盛な子達の手の届かないところに置いておく必要があります:-）。
これは、設計中のRaspberry Piラップトップに関しても同じです。生徒さんは、戦車を作る前にまずノートパソコンを組み立て、
LEDを制御するプログラムを書き、3Dモデルリングをする必要があります。最初のデザインは完了し、今プリントし組み立てているところです！
To enable me to print the laptop using ABS (the same plactic used in Lego blocks)
which is strong, UV resistant and has a melting point above 100C, I've made a temperature
controlled 3D printer enclosure :)
強度があり、紫外線に強く、融点が100度を超えるABS（レゴブロックに使われているのと同じプラスチック）を使ってノートパソコンをプリントするために、
温度制御した3Dプリンタケースを作りました。:）
Unfortunately, the design of the tank and the laptop is taking a lot longer than I
anticipated. This, togther with the English school and family commitments, mean it's
looking likely I won't be able to start robotics until next year. Boo hoo... :(
残念ながら、戦車とノートパソコンのデザインは、予想していたよりはるかに長い時間がかかっています。

We've been doing the usual stuff as a family this year, snowboarding and skiing in the winter,
with Liam now starting skiiing! We went to Arida river in Wakayama to use our inflatable boat,
but we doubled the distance in the boat this time, and it was a bit too far for the kids, oops.
We also found a nice looking spot in Kumatori, but unfortunately there was some barbecue rubbish,
so we decided to clean it up!
家族とは今年もいつも通りです。冬にはスノーボードとスキーをしていますが、リアムもスキーを始めました！
和歌山の有田川に行って空気で膨らませるボートを使いましたが、今回はボートに乗る距離を2倍にしたところ、
子供達には少し長すぎたようです。Oops！泉佐野でも良さそうな場所を見つけたのですが、残念ながらバーベキューのごみがあったので、
皆でそこを掃除することにしました！
I also made a new post box sign, with wood, glass, 3D printed names and logo, and Leon had a great
idea of using epoxy resin to help it look nicer and protect it.
木材とガラスと、3Dプリンタで作った名前とロゴを使った新しい表札もつくりました。
リオンがエキポシ樹脂を使って名前とロゴの見た目を良くして保護するという素晴らしい考えを思いつきました。
One of the keys on Naoko's laptop started going bananas, so we ordered a new one, and I also
decided to upgrade the storage and memory. Unfortunately, it was quite a tough job, as to replace
the keyboard I had to totally dismantle the laptop. It went well though, so Naoko now has an improved
laptop.
尚子のノートパソコンのキーボードのキーの1つがおかしくなったので、新しいキーボードを注文し、
一緒にストレージとメモリもアップグレードすることにしました。残念ながらパソコンを完全に分解する必要があったのでかなり苦労しましたが、
上手くいったので、尚子のパソコンは性能が上がりました。

I'm continuing to make progress with the Robotics projects, and I've made two
working prototype tanks so far. All the electronics and programming are working,
but the motors I've used so far haven't been powerful enough. I've now found
and tested some motors that should be good enough, but am waiting for some
new components needed to control these more powerful motors. Once they arrive
I will 3D print the Mk 3 tank, and do some further testing, wish me luck!
On top of this I've decided the kids can make their own laptop as their first
project build, which they can use to program and 3D model with. However, this
is another challenging project for me to work out, so the start of the class
is going to be delayed into next year. As well as this, the global chip shortage
is making it difficult for me to purchase the mini-computers needed for these
projects, but fortunately I am making some progress on this front.
引き続きロボティクスのプロジェクトを進めていて、戦車の実用レベルの試作品が2個できました。
エレクトロニクスもプログラミングもうまくいったのですが、使ったモーターのパワーが足りません。
パワーが十分と思われるモーターを見つけていくつか試したのですが、
よりパワフルな新しいモーターをコントロールするために必要な部品の到着を待っています。
届けば3台目の戦車を3Dプリントし、さらにテストを重ねます。
上手くいくように祈っていてください！
また最初のプロジェクトとして子供達に自分のノートパソコンを作ってもらい、
それをプログラミングや３D モデリングに使うことにしました。ただこれもまた実現が難しいプロジェクトなので、
ロボティクス教室の開始は来年に遅れます。さらに世界的な半導体不足でこれらのプロジェクトに必要なミニコンピュータが
なかなか買えない状況ですが、幸運なことにこの点については前進しています。

I'm continuing to make progress with the Robotics Class. The workshop is now mostly finished,
and has a 3D printer set up and working within it. For the last few weeks I've been
designing the first robotics project which will be to make a robotic tank. The 3D model of
the body and tracks is almost finished, and I've sourced most of the electronic components
it will need to run. I've also discovered some 3D modelling software which will be really
good for kids to use, so the course will now be a mixture of electronics, robotics,
programming and 3D modelling!
Unfortunately, English school commitments keep pulling me away from the robotics project,
so it will probably take another 2 to 3 months before it's ready to start. One issue that's
arisen with the English school is that Oxford have stopped selling the 3rd edition of Let's Go,
the course we use for teaching children. The newer editions contains less vocabulary, and don't
have the games CD-ROM. Most of the remaining vocabulary is the same, but there are some
differences, which unfortunately means I need to go through all the homework we've made and
change it where necessary. We will continue to use the CD-ROM in class, but we will no longer
be able to use it for homework. However, we are now confident enough with the quality of our
own homework, that we don't believe this will have too much of an impact on our course. We
will also add back in most of the vocabulary that has been taken out, by either writing it
into the student book, or the student's notebook.
引き続きロボティクス教室の準備をしています。工房はほぼ完成し、中に3Dプリンタを設置して使えるようになりました。
この2、3週間は、ロボットの戦車を作る最初のロボティクスプロジェクトをデザインしています。
ボディと無限軌道の3Dモデルはほぼ出来上がり、動かすために必要な電子部品もほとんど調達しました。
子供がとても使いやすい3Dモデルソフトも見つけたので、この教室はエレクトロニクス、ロボティクス、プログラミング、
3Dモデリングが混ざり合ったものになります！
残念ながら、英会話教室への責任があるのでロボティクスプロジェクトばかりしているわけにはいかず、
教室を始める準備が整うまでにはあと2、3か月かかるでしょう。英会話教室の方で起きたひとつの問題は、
子供向けクラスに使っているLet' Goシリーズの第3版をオックスフォード出版局が絶版にしてしまったことです。
新しい版は語彙数が減り、ゲームのCD-Romが付属していません。残りの語彙はほとんど同じですが、少し違いがあります。
このため、残念ながら3Lionsで作った宿題をすべて見直し、必要な訂正を加える必要があります。
レッスンではCD-ROMを使い続けますが、宿題にすることはできません。でも3Lionsで作った宿題の質に十分自信があるので、
カリキュラムにそれほど大きな影響はないと信じています。また、省かれてしまった語彙もスチューデントブックや生徒さんの
ノートに書き込んで追加する予定です。

I finished the outside of the workshop in December, but before finishing
the inside, I decided I should improve the outside of the English school
first.
工房の外側は１２月に完成したのですが、内側を完成させる前に、
まず英会話教室の外観を良くしようと決めました。

I'm continuing to make progress with the workshop, with only the windows
to finish on the outside. There's still a lot to do on the inside though,
but I'm hoping to finish in December or January. Then I can prepare
for my new robotics class, which I would like to start in April or May 2020.
工房の作業は引き続き進んでいて、あとは窓ができれば外側は完成します。内装はまだまだですが、
12月か1月には完成すると願っています。完成すれば、2021年の4月か5月に始めたい新しい
ロボット教室の準備が始められます。

This month I started building a workshop in our smaller garden.
This will hopefully be the last of my big building projects.
Once completed, this will give me the space I need to make
more ambitious robotics projects with my kids, and start a new
Robotics and Programming class.
今月、自宅玄関側の敷地に仕事場を建て始めました。
大きな建物を建てるプロジェクトはこれが最後になると願っています。
これが完成すれば、子供達と一緒により大がかりなロボット工学プロジェクトを行い、
ロボット工学・プログラミング教室を新しく始めるために必要なスペースが確保できます。

Part 1 - Class & Homework Materials
Apologies for my lack of blog posts recently, I've been focussing on making new materials
to improve classes. As mentioned in my last newsletter, I decided to make new homework
materials to improve upon the Oxford homework. Due to the success of this, I then decided
to competely replace the Oxford homework with our own, which resulted in me being very busy
for the last 2 years.

最後のニュースレターでお伝えしたように、オックスフォード出版局の宿題を改善するために、
新しい宿題の教材を作ることに決めました。
これが成功したために、オックスフォード出版局の宿題を完全に3Lionsオリジナルの宿題に替えることに決め、
このためにこの2年間はとても忙しくしていました。
This month I finally finished all the extra homework materials for Let's Begin, Let's Go
1 and Let's Go 2. There's enough material to fill 2 workbooks per level, so that's 6 new workbooks
in total so far! I'm still working on Let's Go 3 to 5, so expect to release another 2 workbooks
per year, for the next 3 years.
今月、Let's Begin、Let's Go 1、Let's Go 2用の追加の宿題がすべて完成しました。
各テキストに2冊のワークブックを作るのに十分な題材があり、
これまでに合計6冊のワークブックを作成したことになります！
まだLet's Go 3からLet's Go 5の教材に取り組んでいるところなので、

I may even start making my own student books once all the workbooks are finished, as I've not been
very happy with the direction Oxford has been taking the Let's Go course after their
3rd edition. They've stopped making the CD-ROM games, and have been making the course
easier by reducing the vocabulary.
オックスフォード出版局のLet's Goシリーズ第3版以降の方向性に不満なので、すべてのワークブックが完成したら、
オリジナルのスチューデントブックも作り始めるかも知れません。

Part 2 - Bike Shed, Play House and Robotics
Almost 3 years ago now, I started to teach my kids about electronics and programming.
This resulted in us making a robotic tank, and an electronic picture frame, which can be
viewed in reception.
自分の子供達にエレクトロニクスとプログラミングを教え始めてほぼ3年が経ち、
これまでにロボットの戦車とデジタルフォトフレームを作りました。
フォトフレームは教室の受付でご覧になれます。
However, with the arrival of our 5th child, storage space was becoming a problem. I also
had the idea of opening a robotics class, for which I would need even more space. This is
when I decided upon making a combined play house and bicycle shed for our main garden. This
would mean I could clear our bikes out of the smaller garden, to give me space to make a
workshop, whilst continuing to provide somewhere for students to play.
ただ5人目の子が生まれ、収納スペースが問題になってきていました。またロボットクラスを開講したいと考えていて、
これにも更にスペースが必要になります。このため、教室入り口横の庭にプレイハウスと
自転車置き場を一体化した小屋を作ることに決めました。
これで生徒さんの遊び場をなくさずに裏側の庭から自転車を移動させてワークショップのための場所を作ることができました。
The shed is now finished, and I also added a rain collection system to the shed, so we can
reduce our tap water usage when watering the garden and allotment, to be more friendly to
the environment (we already have solar panels on our house).
小屋が完成し、この小屋に雨水をためる容器も設置したので、庭と家庭菜園の水やりに使う水道水を減らしてより環境に
優しくなりました（屋根にはすでに太陽光パネルが設置されています）。
I'm now hoping to start the workshop within the next few weeks, and start robotics classes
from April next year!
今後2、3週間のうちにワークショップを作り始め、ロボットクラスは来年4月に開講できると期待しています！

I've been continuing to skateboard with the kids and we're now just starting
to be able to do ollies! I've also recently started teaching my own kids about
electronics and programming by making a robot tank.
